Step 1
Create your business name.
Register your business as a llc, corporation, or sole proprietor.
IF registered as a sole proprietor, you can file for a DBA name ( doing business as )
If registered as an LLC or Corporation, you will NEED an EIN ( TAX ID# )
Step 2
Apply for your DOT# HERE
FMCSA- Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association
Average cost to apply for your DOT is about $300.00 + fees
Step 3
If you plan to cross state lines, you will need to get your MC#
Mandatory waiting period is 21 days for MC# to become active
The BMC-91X is a form the insurance company uses to file with FMCSA that guarantees the insured has enough liability coverage required for the motor carrier.

Step 4

You only need this if you have an MC# and plan on crossing state lines

TXDot – Texas Residents or other motor carriers that pick up and drop off in the State of Texas

Step 7
Check your operating status on safer HERE
INTERSTATE Authority will show “Authorized for property” as operating status on SAFER .
IINTRASTATE Authority will show Active as operating status on SAFER.
